The Land Remembers
The Land Remembers was created intuitively, allowing texture, colour and mark-making to lead rather than beginning with a predetermined image.
As the layers developed, something resembling a landscape began to emerge — weathered earth, distant forms and traces of a place that seemed somehow familiar, despite never having existed anywhere other than on the canvas.
There is a sense of history held within the surface. Layers appear, disappear and remain partially visible beneath what followed, much like the memories and stories held within the land itself.
Inspired by my connection to the Scottish landscape, The Land Remembers reflects the idea that a place carries more than we can see. Footsteps, lives, weather, change and time leave their mark, even when there is little visible evidence that they were ever there.
This painting also represents an important moment in the evolution of my work — a growing freedom to paint intuitively, trust what emerges and allow a painting to reveal its own story.
